A Modern Garden in Bradley Stoke
Accessibility was a key priority to this project, as the garden had a steep drop from the conservatory doors. The new design introduces a raised gravel seating area framed with Corten steel to create a level, welcoming transition into the garden, with slimsett paver pathways adding a contemporary feel and easy movement around the space.
Corten steel appears throughout, inspired by my client’s wish to feature a metal sculpture made by her father — now a meaningful focal point in the garden.
Redefining the layout has created more opportunities for seating and planting, with a clear linear structure. The raised area accommodates a table and four chairs, surrounded by planting for intimacy, while a secondary seating spot captures the last of the evening sun.
Deep borders soften the edges with a mix of retained mature shrubs and a new Amelanchier tree for height and seasonal interest. Evergreen shrubs provide structure, with perennials and bulbs adding bright pops of colour and movement throughout the year. The old plastic compost bin has been replaced with an attractive beehive style composter that need not be hidden, and a slimline water butt has been added for sustainable watering.
This refreshed design brings practicality, personality, and planting potential together in a cohesive, modern garden.
